Coach

Coach Marc Pechter began his wrestling journey in 1980 with the Weasel Wrestling Club based out of Niles West

High School, inspired by his older brother Michael, who wrestled at Niles East. Competing for the Weasels, he

qualified for the IKWF State Tournament during the 1985-86 season. He continued his wrestling career at Niles

North High School, where he earned all-conference honors and developed the work ethic and passion that would define his future as a coach.

Marc has devoted 28 years to coaching wrestling, beginning in 1995 at Aptakisic Junior High School in Buffalo

Grove. He inherited a program with just four wrestlers and grew it to 12 by season’s end, with four state qualifiers. By his fifth year, Aptakisic had grown to 50 wrestlers and qualified 14 athletes for the IESA State Tournament in DeKalb. In 2000–01, he joined Stevenson High School as an assistant coach, helping the program qualify four wrestlers for the IHSA State Tournament, which was then a school record.

In 2001-02, Marc took over as head coach at Deerfield High School during one of the program’s most challenging periods. The team had no returning varsity wrestlers, forfeited 12 weight classes the previous season, and had not won a conference championship in 41 years. Despite a difficult start, he committed to building the program from the ground up - recruiting students, coaching freshman football, attending camps and clinics, and establishing a strong team culture.

The results followed. Deerfield produced its first state qualifier in nearly a decade in 2007 and has since qualified at least two wrestlers every year, with a high of eight in 2021 and seven in 2020, 2022, and 2026. Under Marc, Deerfield has produced 80 state qualifiers, 36 state placers, seven state finalists, and two individual state

champions.

The Warriors won their first conference title in 41 years in 2009 and have since claimed 16 conference

championships in 17 years, including 15 consecutive titles. His teams have earned seven regional championships, four team state appearances, three IHSA Sportsmanship Awards, a fourth-place state finish in 2017, and a state runner-up finish in 2022. Through the 2025-2026 season, Marc’s career record at Deerfield stands at 448-164-2 placing him among the top 20 coaches in Illinois for dual meet wins at a single school.

Beyond competition, Marc founded Deerfield Wrestling Nation (DWN) and Warrior Wrestler Alumni & Friends

(WWAF) to strengthen community and alumni connections. His teams complete multiple service projects

annually, including supporting the Deerfield Optimist Club, Special Olympics, and the Field of Honor with local

police and fire departments. He has also run summer wrestling camps for over 25 years.

Marc considers it an honor to coach and teach young men and women and looks forward to continuing to build

the Deerfield wrestling legacy for years to come. He now also has the privilege of coaching his son, Jake Pechter.
